Can Access to Work Pay for ADHD Coaching?

If ADHD is affecting you at work, you might have heard that Access to Work can help pay for ADHD coaching.
But is that actually true?
Yes, Access to Work can provide funding for ADHD-related workplace support, which can include specialist coaching or strategy support where this is agreed as part of your individual award.
The important bit is that Access to Work isn't a blanket entitlement to a particular type of support. Your award is based on the barriers you experience at work and the support Access to Work agrees you need.
What is Access to Work?
Access to Work is a government scheme designed to help people with a disability or health condition get or stay in work.
It can provide a grant towards practical workplace support, including specialist equipment, assistive software and support workers. ADHD is specifically included in the government's eligibility guidance.
You don't necessarily need a formal ADHD diagnosis to apply either. What matters is that your condition or difficulties mean you need support to do your job.
How can ADHD coaching help at work?
ADHD can affect working life in very different ways.
You might be brilliant at the strategic, creative or people-focused parts of your role but find yourself struggling with the things happening around them.
That might look like:
knowing what you need to do but being unable to start
struggling to prioritise when everything feels urgent
losing track of time
becoming overwhelmed by competing demands
procrastinating until a deadline creates enough urgency
finding it difficult to switch between tasks
creating systems but struggling to maintain them
forgetting actions, conversations or deadlines
perfectionism making tasks take far longer than they should
becoming mentally exhausted from trying to keep everything together
ADHD workplace coaching gives you space to understand how ADHD affects you specifically and develop practical ways of working that fit your brain, your job and your circumstances.
The aim isn't to turn you into somebody who suddenly loves colour-coded productivity systems.
It's to find ways of working that are realistic enough to actually use.
What might Access to Work fund?
Access to Work considers support based on your individual needs.
Government guidance says practical support can include support workers, and its internal guidance specifically refers to strategy training that can help people with neurodivergent conditions cope better at work.
Depending on your individual assessment and award, ADHD-related workplace support may therefore include specialist coaching or strategy support.
You shouldn't commit to coaching on the assumption that Access to Work will reimburse it later. Wait until you know what support has actually been approved if you are relying on Access to Work funding.
Can I ask for ADHD coaching in my application?
You can explain the workplace barriers you're experiencing and the type of support you believe could help.
The key is to describe what actually happens at work, rather than simply listing ADHD symptoms.
For example, rather than:
“I struggle with time management.”
you might explain:
“I can become deeply focused on one task and lose awareness of time, which makes it difficult to move between priorities and can cause me to miss deadlines or work significantly longer hours to catch up.”
That gives a much clearer picture of the workplace barrier you're trying to address.
Access to Work will ultimately decide what support is appropriate and what funding, if any, is awarded.
Do I need an ADHD diagnosis?
No. Current Access to Work eligibility guidance specifically says that you do not need to have a diagnosed condition to apply.
You do, however, need to have a disability, illness or health condition that means you need support to do your job.
Can I apply if I'm self-employed?
Yes.
Access to Work is available to eligible self-employed people as well as employees. This can be particularly useful for founders and business owners with ADHD because you may not have the structures and support that would ordinarily exist around an employee.
There are additional eligibility requirements for self-employed applicants, so always check the latest GOV.UK guidance before applying.
What if I've already been awarded ADHD coaching?
If your Access to Work award includes funding for ADHD coaching, you can start looking for a coach who fits both the requirements of your award and you as a person.
I provide one-to-one ADHD workplace coaching online across the UK and welcome Access to Work-funded clients.
My approach is practical, personalised and focused on understanding what's creating friction in your working life and developing strategies that work with your ADHD brain rather than constantly fighting against it.
